Simple, quick bite with local flare sums up ‘The Cardinal.’ This local spot is close to our house and we had been waiting for the right time to try it out. We were headed to a movie and wanted to grab something quick so we decided to give it a try and take advantage of their outdoor seating area on the beautiful day. The Cardinal is off the beaten path on Peace St and has a great view of the Raleigh skyline. When you walk in, you quickly notice the place has a classic dive bar feel as there are two beers on draft and plenty of bottles and cans to choose from. There are a few games that can be played around the bar as well. The thing that sets this bar apart from all of the other places we have been to around DTR is the…HOT DOGS!! A very tasty treat! When you walk in, head to the bar, grab a pencil and the ordering note pad, choose how many dogs you want (which are $3 dollars) and choose your toppings. The toppings include some that come for free (ketchup, mustard, siracha, hot sauce), some for 25 cents more per topping (chopped onions, beer onions, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, slaw, chili) and you can even get bacon for an extra dollar. Also, it's worth mentioning to our vegetarian friends, you can get veggie dogs and veggie chili here as well! One thing we really liked about the Cardinal as well is that the only side item available to order is chips for a buck! Makes the decision on which side to order a no brainer and the chips pair perfectly with the hot dog! We were able to find a spot outside to enjoy our beers while we waited for our hot dogs. The hot dogs were done within 10 minutes and as you can see from the picture, they look great! We promise you that they taste even better than they look! The next time you are on Peace St in DTR check out the Cardinal! You will probably see us there because we will be back again soon!
